Aims and Background

The Centre for Chemical and Physical Oceanography was established in July 1996 by a memorandum of Understanding signed between the NIWA and the University of Otago. It is one of 5 Centres of Excellence established by NIWA in different universities to foster scientific collaboration. The objectives of the Centre for Chemical and Physical Oceanography are

• to promote and enhance excellence in the area of chemical and physical oceanography;
• to train students at the post-graduate level by sharing and using joint expertise;
• to ensure optimal research links between staff;
• to attract the best graduate students, both nationally and internationally;
• to attract funding into the above area to support training and research.

The Centre is based in the Chemistry Department, University of Otago, and is administered by two co-directors (one from the University and one from NIWA) and two other experts in chemical/physical oceanography (one from the University and one from NIWA) who constitute a Management Committee.

The present co-directors of the Centre are

• Professor Keith A. Hunter, Department of Chemistry, University of Otago
• Dr Robin Murdoch, NIWA, Greta Point, Wellington.
