Metal-based Foldamers

Some special molecules can be made to control their shape through some reversible event. In our case we are looking at using metal coordination to control the shape of molecules. In this way we hope to produce macroscopic actuations via molecular processes.

The Chemistry:

We are using heterocyclic hydrozones as the binding motif, and have already made and characterized a large number of compounds and complexes. We have already made macroscopic gels out of some of these, and shown swelling controlled by coordination.
