About us

COrGePS is a consortium between the Chemistry Department, the Department of Geology, and the Department of Marine Science.

Research interests

The University of Otago Centre for Organic Geochemistry and Paleoclimate Studies (COrGePS) aims to explore the complex interplay between the biosphere, hydrosphere, land surface, atmosphere, and climate for various geological intervals and different timescales.

COrGePS researchers use organic matter preserved in sediments to extract paleoenvironmental information from sediment records. We focus on phytoplankton (coccolithophores and diatoms) and plant-derived molecular organic compounds and the stable isotopic composition of individual organic molecules to study the dynamic interactions between the climate and biosphere in the past.
