IntroChem - Introductory Chemistry

Our distance course, Introductory Chemistry, will be of particular interest to those students wishing to enter any professional or science course for which chemistry may be a prerequisite.

The course will be especially helpful for:

The distance-taught format of this course has proven popular and is considered a successful and more convenient means of independent learning.  Students do not have to attend the University of Otago.

Students who perform satisfactorily may then enrol for the summer-school course, Bridging Chemistry, which specifically prepares students for the CHEM 111 and CHEM 191 courses.  CHEM 191 is a compulsory paper for first-year Health Sciences.

When I decided to come back to Otago University, after 20 years away from school, to undertake a degree in geology, I felt it would be an advantage to have a basic understanding chemistry to help me with my degree.

As I was in full time employment at the time I needed something that was flexible enough to allow me to study when I had the time. The Introductory Chemistry paper offered by Otago University was ideal for this purpose — it allowed me to study at my pace and could be started at any time of the year. I found the paper well-structured and although it had to start at a basic level it soon built up my understanding. I enjoyed the paper so much that I built some more chemistry papers into my study.

I found the Introductory Chemistry paper excellent preparation for studying first-year chemistry at university and would recommend it to anyone who felt the need to improve their understanding in this subject.
