Synthesis and spectroscopy of discrete carbon-rich-containing materials
Carbon-rich materials such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and electron donor-acceptor (D-A) materials are two classes of optically-active compounds that have gained significant attention for photovoltaic and molecular electronic applications. This research project intends to synthesise a range of hybrid materials that incorporate both PAH and D-A motifs, specifically to exploit the dual electron-donor and discotic liquid crystalline mesogenic nature of PAHs in combination with a range of electron-acceptors. These hybrid materials, once made, will be investigated for both their optical properties in solution and in the larger bulk phase.
